What to Expect at a Wrestling Competition

BEFORE to the Competition

Parents pack a nutritional meal, plus snacks (fruit, granola bars, yogurt, etc.), and ensure your wrestler has his singlet, shoes, head gear, and other equipment packed in his wrestling bag.

GETTING to the Competition

Parents are responsible for getting their wrestlers to the competition. If you are not available to transport your wrestler, please notify the coach as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made.

If the competition is at home on a week day (as it usually is 100% of the time), it will probably be held in Thompson High School's gym(s). If you have a middle school wrestler, he will walk to the high school with the other middle school wrestlers, and not need transportation. Parents should be at the gym around 5:30pm to bring *food and water for their wrestlers. Very important: The wrestlers are not permitted to eat until they have weighed in! Once weigh-ins are finished, wrestling usually starts between 6 and 6:30pm.

If the competition is away on a school day, the wrestlers usually meet parent drivers in the parking lot and then go to the competition. Therefore, show up in the middle school gym parking lot (if you have a middle schooler) or the back high school parking lot (if you have a high schooler). If you have room in your vehicle for another wrestler, let the coach know. After all wrestlers are accounted for, then drive to the competition. Make sure you bring *food for your wrestler to eat AFTER he weighs in.

If the competition is away on a weekend, the coach will tell you when and where to meet.

DURING the Competition

Your wrestler will meet with the other team members in the stands and will weigh in when it is their turn. After the team weighs in and the coach gives permission, the wrestlers can eat.

There are two kinds of competition: a tournament and a dual.

  • Most middle and high school competitions are duals, where 14 wrestlers, each representing his weight class, wrestles the other team's 14 wrestlers. Team winners are determined by the most number of points received (as described in SCORING below).
  • The other type of competition is the tournament where wrestlers wrestle the people in their weight class. Some tournaments are seeded, while most aren't. Occasionally a wrestler may wrestle a teammate. Wrestlers are awarded medals for 1st through 4th place.

Often competitions will last all day, so it is beneficial to bring cushion seats, enough snacks, drinks, water, and reading materials.

    AFTER the Competition

If this was a home competition, wrestlers are responsible for rolling up mats and cleaning the gym.

*Note: Most concession stands offer junk food that is not adequate for a wrestler in training, that's why it is better for you to bring your own food items to your wrestler.

    Items to bring can include:

    SCORING

A wrestler can win by pinning his opponent or by scoring more points than his opponent. During a dual points are awarded to the team depending on the match point spread or if there was a pin.
